Permit Application Process:

Check Your Zoning

1. Check to see if your project will comply with the requirements of the Zoning By-Law (distance from property lines, maximum lot coverage etc.)

2. Check to see if you require approvals from any external agencies such as a Conservation Authority or Heritage Committee.

For certain types of projects, the Building Division offers a Concierge Permit Application option that will allow you to receive a building permit within 3 business days.

Planning Ahead? Make Use of the Standard Permit Application Service. The Standard Permit Application Service is available for all home renovation projects. Through this service, the Building Division will provide a review of your application within 10 business days.

Submit Your Application

Bring your completed application form, drawings and any other document that is indicated as being required on the checklist, provided in Step 2, to the Building Division. You or your contractor must apply in person. The Building Division is located at: Flower City Community Campus 8850 McLaughlin Road, Unit 1 Brampton, Ontario L6Y 5T1

Call For Inspections

Once your application has been approved you will be called to pick up your permit, your permit is not issued until you have picked it up and paid any outstanding fees. The permit must be issued in order for you to book inspections. Please visit the Inspections Page for details on when and how to book your inspections.

Finding a Qualified Designer

In the province of Ontario, construction and change of use are regulated by the Ontario Building Code. The Building Code requires that the person or persons who prepare designs and documents for submission in an application for a building permit have certain qualifications. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing also keeps a record of qualified individuals. To search the qualifications of your designer, please use the Ministry website.

Once your permit has been issued you may begin construction. Several stages of the construction must be inspected and passed before you proceed to the next stage. If the building or use of the building is new, you will require an occupancy permit prior to occupying the space.
